The theory is that the daily calorie intake should be split into a 40/30/30 ratio: 40% of the calories should come from carbohydrates, 30% from protein and 30% from fat. The goal is to control insulin intake. This is achieved by balancing carbohydrates, protein and fats in every meal. By regulating blood sugar levels, it keeps insulin levels in a zone and therefore more fat is burned and weight is lost. This plan is similar to low carbohydrate, high protein diets. Most carbohydrates are eliminated that are in rice, potatoes, pasta, bread, pastries and sweets. Healthy carbohydrates like in fruits and vegetables are allowed. Low fat and protein rich foods such as chicken, turkey and fish should be eaten with every meal. Believers in the diet say that 5 lbs can be lost in the first two weeks and one pound every following week.
The Zone diet is very complicated and can be time consuming. To follow it properly, you need to buy a Zone book. The plan eliminates some very nutritious foods, which are an important source of vitamins. It can also be expensive to follow.
